Torri del Benaco is a municipality in the Province of Verona; its origins dates back to the Bronze Age. Torri (named Tulles) became part of the Roman Empire at the end of the I century B.C. and the west tower of the Castle and the urban plan of the port testifies to this period. The Goths and the Lombard built then the walls and the Berengario Tower, in the Church Square. When the Scaliger Family took the power, the harbours were reinforced and a fortified dockyard was created. The Castle was increased on the ruins of the previous structure. When The town accepted the Venetian protection, the Federation "Gardesana dell'Acqua", including ten municipalities, opened up a prosperous period. The decline arrived in the XVI century, when plagues, frosts and famines halved the population.
In the I century the Roman Legions fortified every strategic position in the Venetian Coast, included Torri. The town probably became a Castrum. In the X century the west tower was built and the defense walls. Antonio della Scala, the last member of the Scaliger Family, charged Bonaventura Prendilacqua with the restoration of the castle in 1383.
The Visconti Family attacked Torri e since then a relentless decline started, reaching its peak in the XVIII, when the walls were torn down. The architect Arrigo Rudi restored the structure and in 1983 the Museum of the Scaliger Castle was created.
The main attraction is the citrus tree garden, dating back to 1760. Some aspects of the material culture of Torri del Benaco are illustrated in the museum rooms going from olive growing to fishing to the archaeological finds and rock engravings found along the banks of the Garda Lake.
