Archaeological excavations have proven the presence of humans in the area in the ancient roman period, then the town coped with many invasions by Lombards, Goths, Visigoths and Franks. In the early Middle Ages, the King Berengar let the inhabitants to build fortresses and a castle. The castle has been restored in many occasions.
Fishermen lived in the historical centre and their houses were build one after another, starting from the beach. all the roads are perpendicular to the shore, to allow the boats being moved in front of the houses.
San Zeno Church can be compared to the Galla Placida Mausoleum in Ravenna and it constitutes the main historical-artistic heritage of the town. The little Church is considered one of the most important Carolingian monument in Italy.
